    Details of Disappearance

Haydee was last seen in Arlington, Virginia on May 26, 1989. She worked as a nurse's aide at the time of her disappearance. She was last seen leaving for work.

Her estranged husband, Jose Rodriguez-Cruz, was charged with abduction after a police officer witnessed him in a struggle with Marta outside her home in the 1800 block of Wilson Boulevard on March 29, nearly two months prior to her disappearance. Haydee had previously accused Jose of beating her, threatening her with a knife and taping her mouth, and said he had told her if he couldn't have her, no one could. The court date for the abduction case was set for May 18, but Haydee never showed up to testify, and the charges against Jose were dropped as a result. Seven days later, Haydee's roommate reported her missing.

In 2000, eleven years after Haydee's disappearance, police got a report that she was alive and well in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The authorities there went to the reported current address to speak to her. The missing persons report was closed at that time.

A photo of Jose is posted below this case summary. In April 2017, he was charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Pamela Butler, who disappeared from Washington D.C. on February 12, 2009. Her body has never been found. Police have learned that the Florida woman they'd spoken to in 2000 was in fact Jose's second wife's sister and she'd impersonated Haydee, using Haydee's date of birth and other identifying information which Jose supplied to her. The real Haydee has not been seen since 1989.

Jose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Butler's case in October 2017; he confessed that he'd beaten and strangled her to death after an argument. He is the prime suspect in Haydee's disappearance. A witness reported he'd seen Jose hold a gun to Haydee's head, and that he'd found and read a letter that Jose wrote, stating he was responsible for Haydee's disappearance. The witness had given the letter back to Jose and never saw it again.

Haydee's remains unsolved and is being investigated as a homicide.
