Smith was last seen in Dallas, Texas on December 22, 2008. He was a business/accounting major at Southern Methodist University, and disappeared after he left home to check his fall semester grades at the university campus. He planned to go to work at the Home Depot afterward. Southern Methodist University was closed for the Christmas holiday that day, so Smith could not have gotten his grades. He never arrived at work and has never been heard from again.

Investigators believe Smith left of his own accord. He withdrew over $5,000 from his bank account the day he disappeared, and authorities think he may have taken personal belongings with him. His mother doesn't believe he left on his own, however. He has no history of mental illness, drug abuse or unstable behavior, and he wasn't having any known personal problems before his disappearance. Smith left his cellular phone and credit cards behind, and he hasn't used any credit cards since his disappearance. He lived at home while attending college and had spoken of transferring to a school out of state, but hadn't made any concrete plans about it.
