Details of Disappearance Lopez was last seen in Greenfield, California on February 11, 2017. He was under the Elm Avenue Bridge by the Salinas River, which was swollen from recent rains, with his two nephews when a drunk driver drove through "road closed" signs and a locked metal gate and struck all three of them.
Lopez and his nephews were thrown into the river. His nephews were both able to grab onto tree branches and held on until they were rescued. One of them had minor injuries and the other was hospitalized in critical condition. He survived. Lopez disappeared and has never been seen again. The driver, Nicanor Sanchez, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) causing great bodily injury or death.
Although Lopez is presumed to have drowned, an extensive search of the Salinas River turned up no sign of him. He remains classified as a missing person.
