Details of Disappearance Heck was last seen on February 13, 2009 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. She left her home on Upper Gibson Lane shortly before 10:00 a.m. A few minutes later, she was seen walking out of the woods near her home and down the road. She has never been heard from again.
The morning she disappeared, Heck woke up with a severe headache and a red eye. In the days prior to her disappearance, she had been acting confused and disoriented. Her husband was concerned about her, but Heck said she was fine and was going outside to sweep the porch, in the hopes that the cold air would ease her headache.
Later, Heck's husband went to check on her and found the porch unswept and the broom lying there as if it had been dropped. Heck was missing. Her husband immediately began searching. Within half an hour he had enlisted relatives to help look, and within an hour everyone in the neighborhood was aware of Heck's disappearance and they were looking for her. She was shy and introverted and rarely left the house alone, even to go for a walk.
There were several possible sightings of her reported in the area; the last confirmed one had her walking on 46th Street. The day after Heck's disappearance, one of her shoes was found directly south of where she'd last been seen on 46th Street. The other shoe was apparently never located.
An extensive search of the area, with helicopters and tracking dogs, turned up no sign of Heck. Her family believes she had a stroke, became disoriented and wandered away from home, but what happened after that is unclear. Her case remains unsolved.
