The boat's outboard motor malfunctioned and the two men to get to shore using the boat's trolling motor when, at around 6:00 p.m., a sudden thunderstorm developed. Culp fell overboard, possibly as the result of a lightning strike, and disappeared. He has never been heard from again.

An extensive search of the river turned up no sign of Culp. His wife stated he is a strong swimmer. Culp left behind two sons. He is presumed to have drowned, but his case remains unsolved.
