Mendenhall disappeared from Eureka, California sometime in 1990. She had a transient lifestyle and as a result she wasn't reported missing for several years. Her mummified remains were found in a culvert east of Corning, California in October 1990; she'd been stabbed to death. She wasn't identified until June 2015. Her murder is under investigation.
