Quayle disappeared from Bozeman, Montana on June 6, 1978. Because he enjoyed traveling, sometimes without telling his loved ones in advance, he wasn't reported missing until September 8 that year.
In August 2025, his remains were found by a private mining company in the Revenue Flats area in Madison County, Montana. They were identified in July 2026. Quayle was the victim of a homicide.
