Details of Disappearance

Velasquez Cardenas was last seen in Redding, California on May 29, 2025. That day he was in a rollover car crash after he swerved to avoid a deer. He was coherent afterward and seem to be injured. He called the California Highway Patrol about it, but lef the scene before officers arrived.

Afterwards he went to his apartment on Trudie Trail, changed clothes, then took a cab to the bank, then took a cab to the trailhead of Avalanche Gulch at the base of Mount Shasta, telling the driver he intended to go hiking and planned to beat a friend's time completing the hike. He had backpacking gear with him. He has never been heard from again.

He is from Honduras and at the time of his disappearance, he was in the United States on a student visa. He studied firefighting at Shasta College and was a wrestler. A person who knew him called him "very naive" and speculated he either sustained a traumatic brain injury in the car crash or was afraid he would be deported due to the crash, and fled as a result.

An extensive search of Mount Shasta turned up no indication of Velasquez Cardenas's whereabouts. He had a cellular phone at the time of his disappearance, but it hasn't been active since the afternoon of May 29. After he went missing, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently died.

His case remains unsolved.
