Details of Disappearance

Hecht was last seen leaving his home in Beverly Hills, California on June 7, 1989. He drove away from his residence in a car he was renting while his own was being repaired.

Hecht is the son of a wealthy film producer and grew up in a privileged atmosphere. After graduating Beverly Hills High School, he was employed as a tennis instructor. He was also interested in helping the less fortunate and started spending time with homeless people in downtown Los Angeles. Just prior to his disappearance, he befriended a local homeless man known as "Tony" and invited him to move into his apartment on Bedford Drive.

Tony behaved erratically and is believed to have been suffering from some mental illness. He was very kind to Hecht, however, and Hecht told his mother, "He's helping me mature as a person." At one point Hecht's mother noticed Hecht had burn mark on his hand, and Hecht said he and Tony had been "experimenting how it would make me stronger."

Tony remained in Hecht's apartment after he disappeared, until Hecht's family had him evicted on July 9. Police interviewed the man and decided he had nothing to do with Hecht's disappearance. He remained in the Beverly Hills area after Hecht's disappearance and saw and spoke to Hecht's brother as recently as 2024, but always maintained his innocence in Hecht's case. His brother doesn't think Tony was involved.

Two weeks after Hecht was reported missing, his rental car was found abandoned and unlocked in the business district of Beverly Hills with the keys still in the ignition. There were several parking tickets on the windshield. His wallet, driver's license, credit cards and about $600 in cash and checks were inside, but there was no sign of Hecht at the scene.

He has previously dropped out of sight for a few days at a time, but he's never gone this long without contacting his loved ones. Nevertheless, police think he may have left of his own accord. Hecht's father died prior to his disappearance, but his mother and siblings are still alive and hope for answers in his disappearance. His case remains unsolved.
