Details of Disappearance
Bonifacio was last seen in Portage, Michigan on May 19, 2018. He was staying with a friend, Nicholas Alexander Johnson, and a woman, Rachel Diffenderfer, at the apartment of Shaun and Erin Harvey in the 1700 block of Valleywood Court. Bonifacio, Nicholas and Diffenderfer were all homeless at the time. A photo of Nicholas is posted with this case summary.
The day before Bonifacio disappeared, Nicholas walked in on him and Diffenderfer engaged in sexual activity, which upset him; he reportedly had romantic interest in Rachel. The next day, Nicholas told Bonifacio and Rachel that he and a girl he met at the mall had burglarized a residence and hidden the stolen property. He suggested that he and Bonifacio go through the woods to get the stolen items from their hiding place, but he didn't want Rachel to go with them.
Bonifacio and Nicholas left the residence together on foot. Both Rachel and Shaun heard gunshots coming from that general direction after they left. Hours later, Nicholas returned to Harveys' apartment, alone, and said Bonifacio had gotten into a car with unidentified friends. He had Bonifacio's bandana and was acting extremely anxious. He was covered in mud and wanted his clothes to be washed that same night. He started a fire outside the apartment and burned his boots and sweatshirt.
Bonifacio has never been heard from again. In the days after his disappearance, Nicholas repeatedly went back into the swamp and woods next to the apartment for hours at a time, every day, and would come back filthy every time. He walked around Harveys' apartment talking to himself about not talking to police or taking a polygraph. When Erin asked him where Bonifacio was, he said, "Wouldn't you like to know?"
Eight days after Bonifacio disappeared, the police were called to the Harveys' residence because of a report that Nicholas was pounding loudly on the door, yelling, "The same that happened to Bonifacio is going to happen to you." The area adjacent to the Harveys' apartment was searched, as was the area the gunshots were heard from, but nothing was found. Nicholas tried to claim Bonifacio's belongings, and Rachel had to act secretly to return them to Bonifacio's mother.
In February 2021, Nicholas's parents, Gary and Laura Johnson, disappeared from their Portage residence. When police went to their home to do a welfare check, they found signs of violence inside it. Several days later, their bodies were found in a state game area; they'd been murdered.
Nicholas was arrested on outstanding warrants in the days after his parents went missing. He had a history of violence towards them, and after their bodies were found, he was charged with their murders. In 2023, he pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 29 to 69 years in prison; the judge called the double murder a "truly, ruthless, savage, barbaric course of events". He will become eligible for parole in that case when he is 56 years old.
In September 2025, Nicholas was also charged with Bonifacio's murder, and four related weapons charges. He is awaiting trial in that case while still serving time for his parents' murders.
Bonifacio's body has never been found, but foul play is suspected in this case due to the circumstances involved.
