Cerney disappeared on June 9, 2000 from Rolla, Missouri. He left his residence on his bicycle, telling his wife he was going to town to take care of some business in town, and never returned. He has never been heard from again.
In March 2026, Cerney's remains and his bicycle were found in a wooded area near Rolla. His body was identified by dental records, and his death is under investigation.
