Details of Disappearance
Calhoun was last seen at his Prineville, Oregon home on May 30, 1999. He has never been heard from again. On June 5, his brother found his blue 1990 Subaru station wagon on U.S. Highway 26, near Mount Hood and about thirty miles west of Maupin, Oregon. Inside the car was a propane tank, Calhoun's cellular phone, a gas receipt, a receipt for adult videos, and several full cans of beer. There was no sign of CalhounĀ himself at the scene, and his wallet was missing.
At the time of his disappearance, Calhoun worked as a machinist at his father's shop in Terrebonne, Oregon and was in the process of buying the business. He's dropped out of sight for days at a time when he was using drugs, but has never been gone for this long, and he had always been involved in his daughter's life even after his divorce from her mother.
He had seemed to be doing well in the months before he went missing and his family thought he had stopped using drugs for good, but his wife stated he would go on a methamphetamine binge about once a month, then return home upset with himself that he had been unable to overcome his addiction.
Some of Calhoun's family members believe his disappearance may have been a suicide; they stated he had spoken about dying by suicide before because he was unable to stop using drugs. He reportedly said, "If I can't get a hold on this thing, one of these days I'm just going to disappear and nobody is going to know how to find me."
Calhoun's daughter heard from a collection agent that someone had registered a credit card in Calhoun's name on July 24, a few months after his disappearance. His daughter thinks her father could have intentionally walked out of his life and then opened the credit card account when he ran out of cash, but this theory has not been verified and it's not clear whether Calhoun himself opened that account or if it was someone else using his identity.
His case remains unsolved.
