Zitzewitz disappeared while hiking in the Big Lava Beds area near Goose Lake in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Skamania County, Washington on September 28, 2013. In August 2024, a hiker came across a human skull and pelvis, believed to be Zitzewitz's, near the lava beds where he'd been last seen. His death is under investigation.
