Details of Disappearance

Nancy was last seen in Holladay, Utah. On October 1, 1974, she'd argued with her parents, when her boyfriend of two years came by to visit her after dinner and her father sent him away before she was able to see him. Nancy left the house angrily at 9:00 p.m. and never returned.

Her parents reported her disappearance the next day after they tried to find her and couldn't, but because both they and her police thought she was a runaway, police didn't actually begin investigating her case until October 29.

At the time of her disappearance, Nancy was a student at Olympus High School. She was having problems at school and had been nearly expelled before, and she was also on bad terms with her father; she and her father often argued about her boyfriend. She had no prior history of runaway behavior, however, and left all her belongings behind including her coat and jewelry which she cherished.

In July 1974, a few months prior to her disappearance, Nancy had filed a report of rape and abduction with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. She didn't tell many of her family members about it, but did confide in her boyfriend.

Nancy stated a man between 25 and 30 years old had been coming to her workplace, the Arctic Circle Drive-In at 33rd South and 20th East in Salt Lake City, Utah, and paying excessive attention to her. She said this person offered her a ride home, but instead he took her to an address near Millcreek Canyon and raped her.

She identified her alleged attacker, a married man with children. The man denied committing the rape and abduction, however, and after he passed a polygraph, the police dismissed Nancy's report as "unfounded." It's not clear whether this previous incident had anything to do with Nancy's disappearance three months later. The man she claimed had raped her is now deceased.

Nancy is believed to have been a victim of the serial killer Ted Bundy. A photograph of Bundy is posted with this case summary. He was executed in Florida in 1989 and confessed to many murders before his death, including Nancy's. She fits the profile of his other victims and he was known to have been in the area at the time of her disappearance.

Prior to his execution, Bundy confessed that he abducted her at knifepoint, kept her at his apartment for about 24 hours, sexually assaulted her in a nearby orchard, and strangled her. He said he buried her body along the Bullfrog-Notom Road near Capitol Reef National Park, over two hundred miles from the site of her disappearance. It has never been found.

Bundy is also thought to be responsible for the murders of Nancy Baird, Ann Marie Burr, Lynette Culver, Julie Cunningham, Susan Curtis, Georgeann Hawkins, Vicki Hollar, Rita Jolly, Donna Manson, Denise Oliverson, and many other young women. The women continue to be listed as missing persons. Their remains have never been recovered.
